How to Visualize a 2D Floor Plan in 3D with AI: Step by Step, With Limits to Check

Quick answer: To visualize a 2D floor plan with AI, upload a clean plan image, choose a module (3D Plan for a furnished axonometric or isometric view, General Render to apply style, lighting and materials, Space Planning for a furnished and labelled layout), describe the rooms and furniture style, and generate. MNKI's tutorial says 3D Plan works best with a clear plan and a prompt that names the rooms and furniture style. The result is an illustration of your layout, not a measured 3D model, so treat it as a communication tool and keep your CAD drawings as the source of truth.

Written by the MNKI team from MNKI's own documentation. Last verified: September 29, 2026. MNKI is the tool described here, so read this as a vendor guide. For a multi-tool comparison see Best AI tools for floor plan renders.

Why floor plans are hard for clients to read

A flat drawing shows walls, doors and room labels, but it does not show volume, light or how furniture will feel. A furnished 3D view can make that easier for non-specialists to picture, which is useful for early client alignment, residential sales material and interior proposals.

No plan yet? Draw or model it inside MNKI

If you do not have a clean plan image, MNKI's Free plan includes two apps to make one. MNKICanvas (Beta) is a built-in drawing tool with brush, pen, eraser, line and shape tools, text and crop, a layer system, up to 50 undo steps, grid and snap-to-grid, and export to PNG (with a transparent-background option) or JPEG. You can send a drawing straight to the Studio or to AChAt for rendering. MNKI 3D Sandbox is a 3D builder (built on the open-source Pascal editor, per MNKI): draw walls, place doors and furniture, and walk through your design. Its Present tools include a sun study and view capture, and it exports DXF and PDF drawings from the toolbar (you choose which levels and section cuts to include). Its interface is available in English only.

What MNKI can produce from a plan

MNKI's tutorial says MNKI reads room boundaries, circulation and program from a floor plan. Depending on the module you choose, you can get:

  • 3D Plan: a furnished axonometric or isometric view that shows depth, furniture and room hierarchy from above at an angle. MNKI positions this for residential sales brochures, interior proposals and communicating with non-technical clients.
  • Space Planning: a furnished, labelled plan showing furniture arrangement, circulation and program areas. This module needs a descriptive prompt.
  • General Render: interior or perspective renders using the plan as the base.
  • Mood Board / Material Palette: boards generated from the plan to explore finishes before rendering (see our mood board guide).

Step by step

  1. Prepare the plan. MNKI's tutorial recommends exporting your CAD drawing as a PNG at 1:100 scale for the most accurate reading. MNKI accepts PNG, JPEG and WebP uploads. Tidying the drawing before upload (title blocks, dimension strings and heavy hatching) may help; we have not tested how MNKI reads them.
  2. Pick the module. For a furnished view from above at an angle, choose 3D Plan. General Render applies your style, lighting and materials to any input, including a plan; MNKI's documentation does not say what viewpoint results, so check the output.
  3. Write the prompt. For 3D Plan, MNKI advises naming the rooms and the furniture style. For Space Planning, describe the program. MNKI's example is specific: "open-plan office for 20 people, central kitchen, two meeting rooms".
  4. Choose style and lighting (MNKI lists 28 named styles, 8 presets and several lighting options), or apply the Interior preset.
  5. Choose the strategy. Balanced is MNKI's recommended default. Per MNKI's tutorial, switch to Strict if the render ignores specific elements of your floor plan or adds details you did not request; Creative is for exploration.
  6. Generate and review against the plan. Check that room count, door swings, window positions and circulation match your drawing before you show anyone.

A checklist for reviewing the output

AI can misread plans. Before sharing, verify:

  • Every room in your plan appears, in the right place and with plausible proportions.
  • Doors and windows match the openings you drew.
  • Furniture does not block circulation or violate obvious clearances.
  • Stairs, structure and services (which plans often only imply) are not invented or removed.
  • Nothing has been "improved" that you did not ask for.

If one element is wrong, fix that region with inpainting (Remove, Add or Replace) instead of regenerating the entire view. See our inpainting comparison.

What AI floor plan visualization is not

  • Not a dimensioned drawing. The generated view illustrates the layout. It does not carry verified dimensions, areas or levels.
  • Not code compliance. AI does not check egress, accessibility, fire or planning rules. Those checks belong on your drawings.
  • Not a BIM or CAD deliverable. The visualization modules output images.
  • Not a replacement for a model when you need consistency. If you need many consistent views of the same space, a 3D model gives you a single source for every view. We discuss the trade-off in MNKI vs 3D rendering software for floor plans.

Costs

MNKI's pricing page lists a standard render at 4 credits, and higher-quality renders at 6 credits (2K) and 8 credits (4K). The free plan includes 40 trial credits. That is enough to try a few floor plans, but not unlimited iterations. See MNKI pricing for current plans and what "free" covers.

FAQ

Can AI turn a 2D floor plan into a 3D visualization?

Yes. Upload a clear plan image, choose a module such as 3D Plan, describe the rooms and furniture style, and generate a furnished 3D view. Review the result against your drawing, because AI can misread plans.

What file should I upload?

A clean image of the plan. MNKI accepts PNG, JPEG and WebP; its tutorial recommends exporting CAD drawings as PNG at 1:100 scale.

Is the 3D view accurate to scale?

MNKI does not state that renders are to scale. Treat the view as an illustration of your layout, not a measured model, and use your CAD drawings for dimensions, areas and compliance.

Can I change the furniture or finishes afterwards?

Yes. Use inpainting to Replace a piece of furniture or a finish in a specific region, or regenerate with a different style or reference image.

Is it free to try?

MNKI's free plan includes 40 trial credits and no watermark. Each generation uses credits.
